Setting A Diamond
8 Simple and Effective Tips to Clean a Diamond Ring by Clickr Media
This is the most cliché, but a diamond really is forever. Formed through millions of years and under the right conditions, it preserves its beauty and lustre till time eternal.
Where once it was a sparkling diamond that shone brilliantly in sunlight(or even in soft lighting), now seems dulls and lifeless after a few months of every day wear. When a diamond ring is worn constantly, it is inevitable that it will come into contact with dirt, grime or even sweat and oil.
Impurities such as dirt and dust blocks out light from entering and leaving the most well cut diamond, and leaves it looking dull. Grime that forms in the crevices of the ring will also make the ring setting less bright and polished. Sweat and oil that is layering the exterior of the diamond will distort the path of reflection as light travels through the diamond, the consequence is that the diamond will shine less brilliantly than before.
However, with some simple and effective tips, we can bring the diamond back to life and restore it to its blazing, brilliant glory!
1. Soak the ring in warm water for around 10 minutes.
2. Prepare a solution of mild detergent and warm water.
3. After 10 minutes of soaking in warm water, put the ring into the solution.
4. Use a old tooth brush to scrub off the dirt. To avoid scratching the ring setting, use a soft brush. Rotate the ring while cleaning and make sure you get into all the nooks and crannies.
5. Soak the ring in warm water for around 10 minutes
6. Clean the ring with the toothbrush again in warm water.
7. Rinse in warm water again and air dry it.
8. Clean the diamond ring with a lint-free cloth. It is recommended to use a micro-fiber cloth for good effect.
If possible, wear gloves during the process. Also, avoid strong chemicals such as chlorine from coming into contact with your ring or jewellery (or from your hands for that matter!).
If you have a good ultrasonic cleaning machine (emphasis is on good), you can basically skip steps 1-6. Do note that for delicate jewellery or for diamond rings with really small pave set diamonds, it is best to use the more traditional methods (steps 1-8) and avoid ultrasonic cleaning machines altogether.
Of course, you could just bring the diamond ring back to your jeweller to clean. Most reputable jewellers will have the necessary equipment and know how to restore it to the best shine possible!
